Projects such as the Center for Columbia River History and the Hudson Valley River Institute use formal education programming to reach a broad public audience. In the case of programs like the East St. Louis Action Research Project, educational programming is directly related to broad community development goals.

East St. Louis Action Research Project
Faculty and students from several campus units collaborate with each other and East St. Louis neighborhood groups on highly tangible and visible projects that address the immediate and long-term needs of some of the city's most distressed communities.

Center for Columbia River History
This center's goal is to help communities and individuals gain a better understanding of the "hidden histories" of the basin, that is, the personal oral histories of the people around the Columbia River.
The Hudson River Valley Institute
The HRVI's purpose is to study and promote the cultural and environmental history of the Hudson River Valley. It provides educational resources for scholars, elementary school educators and the general public.
Teaching the Hudson Valley
This organization is helping teachers share with students and other educators an understanding of and love for the culture, ecology and history of the valley, and the tools needed to preserve it.
The Rio Grande Institute
Program goals are to foster appreciation of the unique economic, cultural and natural resources of the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo basin and to facilitate informed action to conserve those resources and use them for the public good.
