Biofuels: Beyond the Headlines

In “Biofuels: Beyond the Headlines,” the first video produced by the Institute on the Environment, University of Minnesota researchers Stephen Polasky and David Tilman attempt to clear up the confusion surrounding biofuels production. Institute to launch Momentum magazine

In September 2008, the Institute on the Environment is launching Momentum magazine. Published three times a year, the magazine will use University of Minnesota expertise to address today’s most pressing environmental issues. The inaugural issue will include writing from leading environmental journalists, as well as an in-depth interview with best-selling author Thomas Friedman. U of M researchers from a range of disciplines will discuss and debate the challenges of climate change, local food, biodiversity and other hot topics. more>>


First Associate Fellows appointed

The IonE has invited a diverse range of scholars to join our efforts as associate fellows. The selected associate fellows represent the U of M, the professional community, and the public and private sectors. They will interact with the IonE through multi-disciplinary research, education and outreach. The appointments run through June 30, 2009, with the opportunity for annual renewal. To date, the IonE has appointed more than 55 associate fellows.


New affiliated organizations join the IonE

The Center for Applied Research and Technology Development (CARTD) and the Center for Water and the Environment (CWE) have joined the IonE as affiliated organizations. Both are part of the Natural Resources Research Institute at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. In collaboration with the IonE, these organizations will pursue research, education and outreach that further our common missions.


Congress passes Higher Education Sustainability Act

In late July, the U.S. Congress passed all provisions of the Higher Education Sustainability Act (HESA) as part of the new Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 (HR 4137). HR 4137 creates a pioneering “University Sustainability Grants Program” at the Department of Education, offering support to develop, implement and evaluate sustainability curricula, practices and academic programs. The U of M, Morris was one of several universities nationwide to endorse HESA. more>>


Dr. Jonathan A. Foley named permanent director of the Institute

A world-class scientist of earth systems modeling, Dr. Foley is an exceptionally creative and experienced institution builder, with a rich and high-impact range of interdisciplinary research, teaching and outreach experience. His work examines complex global environmental systems and their interactions with human societies. He shares a commitment and vision to see that the Institute on the Environment flourishes as one of the finest in the world. more>>


U’s solar car team finishes cross-country race

(7/24/2008) The U’s Solar Vehicle Project team placed fifth out of 24 teams (only 15 crossed the finish line) in the 2008 North American Solar Challenge, a 10-day, 2,400-mile race from Plano, Texas, to Calgary, Alberta, which ended July 22. Centauras, the team car, won three of the five awards before the race, including best-prepared, fastest figure-8 on the track, and fastest lap on the track.


Minnesota’s Statewide Conservation and Preservation Plan offers vision for the state’s environment and natural resources

(7/7/2008) A new report, released today by the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment and the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources, offers comprehensive assessments and recommendations pertaining to the future of Minnesota. The Statewide Conservation and Preservation Plan charts long-term strategies for addressing critical issues and trends impacting Minnesota’s environment and natural resources. more>>


Renewable Energy scholarship winners

The Initiative for Renewable Energy and the Environment, in partnership with the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, has selected nine student projects as part of the University of Minnesota’s first renewable energy scholarship. more>>


Water Resources Center named first affiliate organization of the Institute

As of this month, the U of M’s Water Resources Center is the Institute on the Environment’s first affiliate organization. The WRC will join IonE in research, education and/or outreach activities, bringing in new ideas and new connections, and taking those ideas and connections back the center. More affiliate organizations will join the IonE throughout summer 2008.
