About the Institute on the Environment
Today's environmental challenges can’t be solved with business-as-usual thinking. That's why the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment (IonE) is taking a new approach. We're discovering solutions to Earth's biggest problems through cutting-edge research, partnerships and leadership development.
Discovering Solutions
IonE supports a range of multidisciplinary research initiatives aimed at shaping transformative solutions to challenges at the intersection of society and the environment. Our diverse portfolio includes programs, discovery grants, resident fellowships and mini grants that focus on grand challenges related to energy, food and land use, freshwater, population and development, and whole systems. While our roots are in academia, partners from business, industry, government and other sectors are integral to all aspects of our work.
Educating Leaders
IonE is shaping the next generation of environmental leaders with specialized training in communication, media relations, entrepreneurship, systems thinking and more. While our efforts focus on graduate, professional and postdoctoral students, we also serve the larger University community by coordinating the undergraduate sustainability minor and other environment-related offerings, the emerging graduate sustainability programs, and the U of M’s Environment & Sustainability Portal.
Engaging Partners
Today’s environmental challenges can’t be solved in a vacuum. Their sheer magnitude and complexity demand we bring a spectrum of partners to the table. IonE engages public, private and nonprofit partners who work together across disciplines, sectors and continents to capitalize on synergies and envision and carry out transformative solutions.
